A community supply of clean drinking water is needed in Hingurakgoda to eliminate CKD and other water borne illnesses.
Ulkatapotha is a village in Hingurakgoda, Polonnaruwa. It is home to more than 3000 residents from 660 families. The villagers faced severe hardships in gaining access to clean drinking water. Currently, the villagers have a 100 ft common well as a water source for an RO plant that was recently installed. However, the capacity of the current RO plant is only 500 liters- which is short of the daily 9000-liter minimum requirement of the village. For the rest of their drinking and cooking purposes, they have to make a difficult 1 km trek- where they have to buy water. The villagers are historically farmers- but currently, their cultivation activities are limited due to their water poverty status.
Gammadda after consultation with Government Engineers decided to construct a Reverse Osmosis Plant for the residents of Hingurakgoda. The source water was tested to determine RO plant parameters. The RO Plant was installed by the Sri Lanka Navy. Upon completion of the RO Plant- a central water distribution point was established for the community to access freely. Gammadda established a Saviya society for the maintenance and upkeep of the project. The plant now provides 3000+ residents with clean drinking water.
